“It’s an unconventional space where you can taste amazing brands of wine and beer,” she says.
As The Annex springs to life, it is a multi-dimensional blend of business ideas packaged in a creative space.
Booths with bright yellow benches and abundant green foliage stenciled on the walls create a warm, inviting tropical atmosphere—reminiscent of the 20 years Hutchison lived in Hawaii.
In fact, some of The Annex’s featured wines will be a line Hutchinson created for the millennial market called MANA. She says it’s a “lifestyle brand” for people who associate with the ocean. In the Hawaiian culture, Mana is spiritual energy of power and strength that exist in both objects and people. All proceeds from these wines go to support Na Wahine O Kalani, a 501C3 non-profit she started to provide scholarships for female athletes in Hawaii.
“I wanted to be a professional athlete,” she explains, adding that she wishes she had more time for sports nowadays. Hutchison played competitive soccer for years but retired in 2015 from a major injury. Recently she coached a season of the Stevenson High School JV team.
Other wines at The Annex include some of the 40 labels that Hutchison represents with her Industry Outlaw brokerage and more. “They are handpicked partnerships with brands that share a creative approach in the ever changing beverage industry,” she says.
Aviary of Napa Valley, Les Mistral, Alias and Bruma are a few of the numerous brands to be carried in the shop. As a retailer, The Annex will also stock many virtual brands—brands that don’t have their own winery or as she puts it, “It just made sense to build a house for all my little children.”
In addition to wine and selected craft beers, The Annex has partnered with Taste of Elegance catering to offer charcuterie and cheese boxes for nibbling.
Hutchison got her start in the wine business with a West Maui sales route for JDM Beverages and her bubbly, energetic personality was a perfect match for wine sales.
In 2011 she moved to St. Helena, working with Vinifera Wine Marketing and later as Western Regional Sales Manager for Miner Family Wines.
She currently lives in Pebble Beach and has created Industry Outlaw as an umbrella company encompassing the brokerage, her MANA wines label, the new wine bar/shop and creative writing projects, such as a coffee table book she is working on called “The Art of Spitting.”
In addition to the wine bar and bottle shop, The Annex will offer a wine club with two options. Club members can choose three selections of “nouveau” or three selections of “traditionalist” wines and selected labels—shipping to members throughout California
Another component of the business is concierge service. The Annex will deliver wine, supply a sommelier for in-home service or a customer can come in to The Annex for advice with a private event. “We will work with your caterer to suggest the best wine for your event and your guests’ palate,” she says.
Special events are also a big part of what Hutchison has in mind. This summer The Annex will host an Italian Chalk Art festival, with drawings out in the parking lot at the Crossroads.
Grand opening of The Annex, located at 237 Crossroads Blvd, is slated for Mother’s Day Weekend.
